What will you use most?
For films and TV programmes, start with TV connectivity and clear dialogue. For music, consider whether you can place two speakers to the left and right of your listening position. Soundbars and stereo pairs have overlapping but different roles.
When a soundbar is convenient
A bar is usually easier to place near the TV. Check its height and compatible connections. Do not assume a subwoofer and surrounds are included: package contents depend on the model. Supporting a surround format does not mean a separate speaker is supplied for every channel.
What a stereo pair offers
Two separated speakers provide left and right channels. Placement relative to the listener matters. Powered pairs do not need a separate amplifier; passive pairs do. Check TV connectivity and volume control before purchasing.
When to consider multichannel audio
If you have room for additional speakers and cabling, consider a receiver-based cinema system. Choose a layout for the room and actual amplified channels rather than a large number in the package name.
Prepare your shortlist
Measure the space, note your TV model and list the sources. Decide whether you want a separate subwoofer and can place surround speakers. This checklist is more useful than comparing wattage or the number of advertised modes alone.
