A search for JBL Ultimate can now refer to two generations. Their format is similar, but Ultimate 2 adds touchscreen controls, EasySing and different connections. For a home, garden or event setup, start with how and where you will use it: the newest model is not necessarily the easiest one to move.

1500 vs 1100 W: what this means when choosing
Ultimate 2 has a higher stated amplifier output. Watts are not a direct scale of perceived loudness: an extra 400 W does not mean “36% louder.” Drivers, signal processing, placement and the room all affect the result. This guide compares documentation and use cases, rather than measured sound pressure from the two speakers.
For a room at home, first consider space for the cabinet and how much bass is appropriate. For an event, consider listening distances and power outlets. Avoid choosing by a fixed guest count: the same speaker operates in very different acoustic conditions.
Karaoke: when EasySing is useful
The original Ultimate lets you sing through a connected microphone over a prepared backing track. Ultimate 2 adds EasySing to reduce the lead vocal in a normal recording. This is useful when you want to sing something from your playlist but cannot find a suitable karaoke version.
Do not assume identical results for every recording: test your chosen songs and allow time to set microphone levels. Prepare a few checked tracks before friends arrive. Microphones are not listed in either model’s standard package, so budget for them separately.
TV, DJ console and other speakers
Ultimate 2 has an optical input. Connect the TV’s Optical Out and select PCM in its audio settings, as JBL’s guide specifies. The optical cable is separate. Check that the TV has the required audio output; a similar connector or HDMI alone does not provide this connection.
Ultimate 2 offers an XLR line input for a mixer or DJ console. Match the console output to the speaker input before buying a cable. Auracast links compatible JBL speakers; ordinary Bluetooth support does not establish compatibility. Do not automatically assume the original Ultimate can join that connection.
Power outlets and transport matter beyond output
Both Ultimate models require mains electricity. Wheels make them movable, not battery-powered. Ultimate 2 weighs 47.68 kg and is 49.33 cm deep. Before buying, measure the boot, doorways and installation space, and plan who will lift it over steps.
For garden use, prepare a dry power connection. IPX4 is splash protection; it does not make an extension lead weatherproof or mean the speaker can be left out in any weather.
Which to choose, and when PartyBox 720 makes sense
Choose Ultimate 2 if you will use EasySing, connect a TV optically or use DJ equipment through XLR. If you need Wi-Fi music and karaoke with prepared backing tracks, compare the original Ultimate’s current price: a new feature has value when you will actually use it.
If music away from a socket is the priority, add PartyBox 720 to your shortlist. Battery operation needs two Battery 600 packs, which JBL excludes from the European package. Compare the complete setup including batteries, rather than just the speaker price. Our separate guide covers 520, 720 and the original Ultimate.

Frequently asked questions
Does Ultimate 2 run on a battery?
No. It needs mains power; Battery 600 does not turn Ultimate 2 into a battery-powered model.
Should I replace my original Ultimate?
Not just for a newer generation number. First identify what you need: EasySing, optical connectivity or XLR. If your current setup meets your needs, replacement is optional.
Can I connect microphones?
Yes, both support microphone connections. Check the microphone or receiver output against the speaker’s input. Microphones are purchased separately.
