How to choose your first turntable and build a vinyl system

Listening to records takes more than choosing an attractive turntable. You need the entire audio chain, from stylus to speakers. A good first system starts with a simple list: what you already own, where the equipment will go and what the complete setup costs. This guide helps you choose without buying incompatible components.

Feature What to check Why it matters
Connection PHONO or LINE output Determines whether a separate phono preamp is needed
Speakers Powered or passive Passive speakers need a power amplifier
Operation Manual, semi-automatic or automatic Different levels of hands-on involvement
Maintenance Replaceable stylus and accessible documentation Makes setup and maintenance easier

Start with the equipment you already own

Write down the exact models of your amplifier and speakers. An AUX or RCA label does not confirm a phono preamp: RCA describes the connector, while PHONO and LINE refer to different signal levels. If you are starting from scratch, decide whether powered stereo speakers or a separate amplifier with passive speakers would suit you better.

Budget for the turntable, missing components, cables, a stable support and basic record care. Avoid spending everything on one device and choosing speakers only from whatever money remains.

Two straightforward first-system layouts

A compact setup: a turntable with PHONO output → powered speakers with a compatible phono preamp. A separates setup: turntable → phono preamp → amplifier → passive speakers. The phono stage can be built into the amplifier; another box is not always needed.

JBL TT350 Classic can be considered alongside Klipsch R-50PM: the turntable has a PHONO output and MM cartridge, while the speakers have a built-in phono preamp. This is an example of compatibility based on documentation, not a bundle sold at a combined price. Check switch settings and the ground connection in the manuals.

What to compare on the turntable itself

Check how it operates: are you happy to lift the tonearm yourself at the end of a side? Look at adjustments, replacement styli, setup instructions and consumable availability. Belt drive or direct drive alone does not determine whether a turntable will suit you.

TT350 Classic uses direct drive, manual operation and 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds. A pre-installed cartridge does not remove the need for initial setup according to the manual. Do not copy tracking-force values from another stylus or model.

Placement and your first checks

Prepare a stable, level surface. Separate the turntable from the speakers where possible to reduce transmitted vibration. Check lid clearance and access to sockets: will you be able to change a record without knocking the tonearm?

Before first use, lower the volume and check connections and PHONO/LINE switch positions. If the sound is very quiet or distorted, check the signal path first. Maximum volume cannot compensate for a missing phono preamp.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a separate amplifier?

For passive speakers, yes. Powered speakers already have amplification, but you must check separately whether they have a PHONO input.

Can you start with one Bluetooth speaker?

Only if the turntable and speaker support a compatible way to transmit audio. Bluetooth on the speaker does not add Bluetooth to the turntable.

What should you buy first?

Choose the complete system layout and check compatibility before buying the components.
